“Our thanks go to Jennie Drummond and Emmie Ratter at SMC Art who have created the artwork on our behalf and allowed the artists to express their creativity free of constraint.

I hope that you have as much fun seeing the collection as we did choosing the pieces.”

David Pickett, SAGA New Build Director

Saga’s purpose-built cruise ship Spirit of Adventure is the second of two new luxury passenger ships being constructed at Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenberg, Germany and launched in July 2021.

London based interior design company SMC designs was commissioned by Saga Cruises to curate a collection of artworks especially created for the ship’s interiors which would showcase the best of British contemporary design.

I was approached by SMC to contribute to the collection and designed two site-specific wall sculptures to be sited in the spa area of the “Spirit of Adventure.”

Each piece of my ceramic artworks is meticulously designed and tailored to meet the unique needs of my clients. Following the brief I created two installations, each measuring 220 x 170 cm and comprising 100 undulating ceramic wall modules in matt and high-gloss shades of green and beige, accented with gold enamel.

Inspired by water and the sunlit sea ever-changing surface of the deep sea, the designs harmonize with the interior's colour palette and perfectly complement the spa's tranquil environment.

Created in shades of green rising from dark to light the artworks evoke the glow of light penetrating and dispersing through water. The wavy sculptural tiles add movement and fluidity and highlights in gold enamel and high-gloss glazes suggest light reflections bouncing off the translucent water surface.

Reminiscent of rippling patterns the artworks remind passengers of their environment and enhance their experience with a lively yet calming presence.
